    A Workshop on Pedestrian Safety and Accommodation

    THE PROBLEM COMMUNITIES FACE

    Pedestrian safety is a concern in many communities. It cannot be solved by any one person; a team effort involving the community is needed for success.

    Did you know:*

    Ø6,000 pedestrians are killed each year. This works out to approximately one every 94 minutes.

    Ø90,000 pedestrians are injured each year. This is approximately one every 6 minutes.

    ØThe financial cost per year is close to $20 billion.

    * Data obtained from USDOT

    ROAD SHOW OBJECTIVES

    The Road Show will:

    • show benefits of promoting a safe pedestrian environment

    • show practical aspects of having a safe pedestrian environment

    • review the changing needs of local agencies

    • identify potential problems

    • introduce available tools and techniques as well as outline a framework to assist in the establishment of a more cohesive community that works toward having an environment that is safe and friendly for pedestrians

    Transportation professionals are constantly challenged by a rapidly changing world. The purpose of the Pedestrian Road Show is to develop a community approach to this issue. This approach will assist in identifying and solving problems affecting safety and walkability. In addition it will demonstrate there is valid concern for this problem and will give usable solutions.

    An action plan which takes place at the community level can be developed once a commitment to follow-through on the problem is achieved. This could result in forming a group of advocates to help support this cause.
