    THE PROBLEM COMMUNITIES FACE

    Pedestrian safety is a concern in many communities. It cannot be solved by any one person; a team effort involving the community is needed for success.

    Did you know:*

    Ø6,000 pedestrians are killed each year. This works out to approximately one every 94 minutes.

    Ø90,000 pedestrians are injured each year. This is approximately one every 6 minutes.

    ØThe financial cost per year is close to $20 billion.

    TRAINING OBJECTIVES

    The primary objective is to develop and equip people who can effectively conduct Pedestrian Road Shows at the local level which will:

    • show benefits of promoting a safe pedestrian environment

    • show practical aspects of having a safe pedestrian environment

    • review the changing needs of local agencies

    • identify potential safety problems

    • introduce available tools and techniques as well as outline a framework to assist in the establishment of a more cohesive community that works toward having an environment that is safe and friendly for pedestrians

       

    A Pedestrian Safety Road Show will be conducted on the second day in conjunction with this training to provide a hands-on learning opportunity for participants.

    Transportation professionals are constantly challenged by a rapidly changing world. Pedestrian Road Shows are designed to develop a community approach this safety issue. Pedestrian Road Shows will assist in identifying and solving problems affecting safety and walkability. In addition they will demonstrate there is valid concern for this problem and will give usable solutions.


    Who should Attend the FACILITATOR TRAINING

    This training is designed for:

    state and local agency public works directors, city and traffic engineers and planners,

    decision and policy makers such as county executives and metropolitan planning personnel,

    safety-related personnel such as law enforcement, EMS, and local safety coalitions, as well as
